Firm Foundation Housing and Wellness utilizes single-family homes rather than large commercial buildings for our homeless shelter services because we believe a true "home" is vital for healing and stability. These smaller, more intimate settings provide a nurturing, home-like environment that fosters dignity, privacy, and stronger relationships among residents and staff. This approach helps reduce the stigma of homelessness by integrating residents into existing neighborhoods, facilitating easier access to local resources, and enabling us to offer more tailored, individualized support, ultimately providing a solid foundation for long-term well-being and successful reintegration into the community.
Firm Foundation Housing and Wellness chooses not to list the specific addresses of its single-family shelter homes online primarily for the safety and privacy of its residents. Publicly disclosing these locations could put vulnerable individuals, including those fleeing domestic violence, human trafficking, or other dangerous situations, at risk from abusers or others who might wish them harm. It also helps maintain a sense of normalcy and integration into the neighborhood by not marking the homes as "shelters," thereby reducing stigma and ensuring a more secure and stable environment for residents to rebuild their lives.
With the support of the State of Iowa and the Federal Surplus Government Property Program, Firm Foundation Housing and Wellness is pleased to announce the scheduled opening of our first two service homes in Spring of 2026. This milestone represents a significant advancement in our mission to provide secure and supportive housing environments.

Even as we prepare for our 2026 opening, Firm Foundation Housing and Wellness is actively supporting individuals in need today. We're proud to provide valuable community referrals and resources for essential services like job development and resume building. We also offer crucial mental and emotional well-being information, support, and referrals to comprehensive community services, alongside spiritual counseling and support. Our goal is to connect you with the help you need, right now.
Currently, Firm Foundation Housing and Wellness provides services exclusively within Polk County, Iowa. However, we are actively engaging with public and county officials and fully intend to expand our services to residents in Marion County, specifically in the city of Knoxville, in the near future.
Firm Foundation Housing and Wellness will have separate service homes for men and women to ensure a safer, more secure, and trauma-informed environment for all residents. This approach allows us to reduce risks, enhance privacy, and provide gender-specific support that addresses the unique vulnerabilities and needs of men and women experiencing homelessness. By fostering a comfortable setting where residents can build stronger peer relationships, we aim to better support their healing and recovery journeys.
Men and women over the age of 18, unfortunately we will be able to provide services to anyone who is on any violent registry.
